Many people think that air pollution is only a problem outdoors in big cities. However, indoor air often contains more contaminants than the air outside. Mold, formaldehyde, dust, radon gas, and pet dander are some of the causes of poor indoor air quality. The problem affects everyone in the household but is especially bothersome for children, the elderly, and people with upper respiratory health concerns. We spend more time inside our homes when the weather is cool, so clean air is especially important. Here are a few easy ways to improve indoor air quality in your home.
Maintain Proper Humidity Levels
A humidity level between 30% – 50% keeps dust mites, mold growth, mildew, and some other pollutants to a minimum. Some contaminants thrive in moist conditions; don’t create a perfect environment for them. Use a dehumidifier during the winter and the A/C during the summer to control humidity and improve indoor air quality.
Smoke Outside the Home to Improve Indoor Air Quality
With the toxins and carcinogens found in cigarette smoke, lighting up inside the home is risky to the entire family. Secondhand smoke leads to a variety of health concerns. Children may experience more frequent ear infections when there is smoke inside the home. Kicking the habit altogether is the best option, but when that isn’t possible, smoke outdoors away from doors and windows to help keep your home’s air clean.
Clean the Floors
Vacuum the floors twice per week using a cleaner with a HEPA filter. HEPA filters remove 99% of the pollutants from the floor, even particles trapped deep within carpet fibers. Use a microfiber mop or a steam cleaner for flooring that cannot be vacuumed. Cleaning the floors reduces pollutants in the home and contributes to better air quality.
Door Mats at Entry Points
Shoes track dirt and various types of contaminants into the home that become trapped and circulate in the air, causing problems for the family. A doormat placed at every entrance helps trap the pollutants and dust particles before they are tracked throughout the home. To reduce pollutants even more, encourage family members to remove shoes completely upon entering the home.
Take Time to Improve Indoor Air Quality
Protecting the well-being of your loved ones is well worth the additional effort. Use the tips above to improve indoor air quality and keep your family and friends healthy and safe while they’re in your home.
